In days long past, as dire threats took shape, a grand host of allies from across the Central Flanaess took to the field in a bid to strike at the heart of evil in their midst, standing as beacon for all Oerik against the forces of darkness. This impactful and historic battle played out once each day of MagicCon: Chicago 2025 in live convention play for over 200 players. The adventure had heroes fighting alongside Prince Thrommel IV’s Righteous Host against the terrifying might of the Horde of Elemental Evil.
Hard Decisions
Set seven years before the main storyline in the Legends of Greyhawk campaign, pivotal choices were made in the heat of battle. We’ll see the effects of these choices echo through time and ultimately affect the direction of events in the Legends of Greyhawk adventures as they continue to release at upcoming conventions, with similar pivotal moments for players at future premieres determining the direction of the campaign overall. One wonders if we will come to regret them …
Not just one enemy…but many
During the battle, it was revealed that three powerful, scheming factions within the Horde of Elemental Evil were attempting to advance their own plans amidst the chaos. With much self-sacrifice, and the use of clever gambits from the heroic adventurers to silence foes, detect the thoughts of enemy leaders, and disguise themselves as members of the horde, two of the factions were thwarted, leaving meaningful strength only to the followers of the Elder Elemental Eye, Chaos Incarnate, the rolling pitch black darkness that is the chained god, Tharizdun.
How do you destroy Chaos? Strive to bring order and meet it on the battlefield.
As the battle dragged on, evil awakened the land itself as moving houses rose to fight our players! Fireballs erupted on all sides, and dragons even fell from the heights onto the battlefield, crashing into the forces below. Waves of creatures washed over our heroes and yet they held the line, allowing Prince Thrommel himself to fell a cyclops in a gory but satisfying encounter, and helping the army succeed in their endeavors.
Victory, but at what cost?
The forces of Elemental Evil at Emridy Meadows were defeated on that monumental day at the hands of the Righteous Host, cementing the memory of all who fought in the pages of history. Yet the cost was high. The lands around the Temple of Elemental Evil were rent and poisoned, whole towns would need to be reconstructed, and the people of the Central Flanaess would need to nurse their wounded back to health. Over the next seven years, the influence of Elemental Evil was nowhere to be seen in the surrounding settlements. But those who remember that some of Tharizdun’s followers lived watch vigilantly for signs of their return.
Luckily though, when darkness rises Oerth always manages to birth heroes of Legend, and the descendants of all who fought for their homes that day as champions of the Flaeness will carry on, inspired by what happened at the Battle of Emridy Meadows.
